Chemo is Covered, Port of D’Arcy, Biopsy, Naturopathic Oncologist, and a Beach Walk

February 12, 2023

Sunset on the beach near our home.

Chemo is covered! I was tired of pushing the oncology clinic to figure out the chemo-immunotherapy insurance but after my sister (Thank you!) encouraged me, I called one more time. It took some time on hold, which was a good sign, when I was finally told that they were working on it that day and that I’d get a call back from Finance. Now this rang a bell! On the first visit to the Oncology Department I’d been told by the receptionist that my insurance card was denied but not to worry, the Finance Department would figure it out. It had been a month of, no worry to escalating worry because with no insurance, there is no chemo.

Someone from the Finance Department called me within the hour and gave me the good news that it had been approved. My insurance company, Surest, is backed by the megalithic healthcare insurer, United Healthcare, but it is new and does things differently. Among other things, I have no copays. This seems to have stumped their regular processes. From what I understand Finance saw that it’s backed by United Healthcare and assumed the payment process works the same as a regular United Healthcare plan. It does not, I’m not sure how because those are details other people are paid to know. I might have a little bit of a grump about this and how long it took.

The Port of D’Arcy? 😉 For the next step, I had a successfully negative COVID test yesterday in preparation for the port installation scheduled for tomorrow, Monday, February 13.

The MRI guided biopsy Yup. I have one more tumor in the right breast. It’s in-situ, as in keeping to itself at this point, no fuzzy borders. My surgeon and I will discuss the results on Tuesday.

Naturopathic Oncologist She had some good advice. We went over my current supplements, eliminated some and increased a couple. To help with neuropathy and mouth sores from the treatments, she said to hold something cold in my hands and eat ice chips during treatments. This will help prevent the chemo from getting to those areas. I need to figure out how to keep my toes cold. Any ideas? She pointed out that the chemo is precisely designed to attack fast growing cells, like those in the tumors in my right breast. This is encouraging.

Matt and I on the beach.

We took advice, again from my sister, and went for a walk on the beach. 😀
